How 1099 Taxes Work in Indiana
As a freelancer, consultant, or gig worker in Indiana, you are technically your own employer. This means you aren't subject to standard W-2 withholding from a "boss." Instead, you must manually track your earnings and determine federal and any applicable state obligations. Check the Indiana Department of Revenue for state-specific rules.
Indiana-Specific Considerations
Business Entity Tax
Sole proprietors owe no state entity fee. Indiana LLCs file a Business Entity Report with the Secretary of State every two years — $32 online or $50 by mail — a registration fee, not an income tax. There is no separate Indiana franchise tax on pass-through LLCs.
Local Income Tax
Unlike most flat-tax states, all 92 Indiana counties add their own county income tax on top of the 2.95% state rate — rates for 2026 range from about 0.5% up to 3.38% depending on the county, so your real combined rate can run roughly 3.45% to 6.33%. Marion County (Indianapolis) is 2.02%, Lake County 1.50%, Allen County 1.59% for 2026 — check your specific county before estimating your total burden.
Filing & Estimated Payments
Individual returns use Form IT-40. Indiana follows the federal calendar — April 15, June 15, September 15, January 15 — filed with Form ES-40, required once your combined state AND county tax liability not covered by withholding is $1,000 or more for the year.
Worth Knowing
Indiana's county income tax is based on where you lived or had your principal workplace on January 1 of the tax year, not where you live when you file. Move counties mid-year and the January 1 county rate generally applies to your entire year's income.
Worked Example: $75,000 Indiana Contractor
On $75k of net 1099 profit (single filer, no deductions), the calculator estimates $6,504 in federal income tax, $10,597 in self-employment tax, and $1,581 in state tax — leaving about $56,317 take-home.
