How 1099 Taxes Work in New York
As a freelancer, consultant, or gig worker in New York, you are technically your own employer. This means you aren't subject to standard W-2 withholding from a "boss." Instead, you must manually track your earnings and determine federal and any applicable state obligations. Check the New York Department of Taxation and Finance for state-specific rules.
New York-Specific Considerations
Business Entity Tax
New York State has no CA-style flat annual LLC franchise tax, but every new NY LLC must publish notice of its formation in two newspapers for six consecutive weeks within 120 days of forming — a requirement that can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars up to $1,500+ in New York County (Manhattan), depending on the county. Skipping it can suspend the LLC’s authority to do business in NY.
Local Income Tax
If you live in or do business in New York City, NYC adds its own resident income tax (roughly 3.078%–3.876% depending on income) on top of the state tax, collected through your state return. Self-employed NYC residents and single-member LLCs can also owe the separate Unincorporated Business Tax (UBT) — a 4% tax on net income allocated to the city — though a credit on your personal return offsets some or all of it for many filers. Yonkers has its own resident tax surcharge too.
Filing & Estimated Payments
Individual returns use Form IT-201. New York's estimated-payment trigger is far lower than the federal one: you must pay quarterly if you expect to owe $300 or more in NY State, NYC, and/or Yonkers tax combined, after withholding and credits — compare that to the federal $1,000 threshold. Due dates match the federal calendar: April 15, June 15, September 15, January 15.
Worth Knowing
NYC's Unincorporated Business Tax is easy to miss if you're used to thinking your state return covers everything — a self-employed NYC resident can owe both the state/city personal income tax AND a separate 4% UBT filing on the same business income, even though a credit often reduces what's actually paid.
Worked Example: $75,000 New York Contractor
On $75k of net 1099 profit (single filer, no deductions), the calculator estimates $6,504 in federal income tax, $10,597 in self-employment tax, and $2,894 in state tax — leaving about $55,004 take-home.

Quarterly Estimated Payments
Federal estimated payments generally apply when you expect to owe at least $1,000, subject to withholding and safe-harbor rules. Typical federal due dates are below; weekends and holidays can shift them. January is in the following year. State requirements vary:
